Over the last several years of writing about and selling skis I feel like all we, the ski industry, have been talking about is rocker this and rocker that. Though don't get me wrong, rocker is a good thing for many applications and most skiers.

The intention of this post is to bring the awesomeness that is camber back to light. To say camber is outdated is completely ridiculous.

Just because camber has been around for a while doesn't mean that it's an outdated ski technology. Camber acts like a suspension, set a pair on a flat surface; floor, counter etc. You'll notice when the ski is unweighted that there is a gap between the base of ski and the surface you set it on, and when you push down it has a spring type feel. Because of this suspension like construction known as camber, a cambered ski is always fighting to make contact with the snow. Imagine you have a car - with no suspension - and you're driving on a dirt road - maybe it's a little bumpy - you go around a corner Without a suspension you're just going to bounce off the road and if you don't bounce off the road you're driving very slowly - and that's not very fun.

Fully Rockered skis don't fight for contact with the snow like cambered skis do, rockered skis try to stay on top of soft snow or powder. That's why cambered skis are a rougher ride, as the ski fights for contact on chopped up or cruddy snow your body takes a bit more of a beating because the ski cuts through instead of floating on top.

A cambered ski is a rougher ride in chopped up snow because the tip doesn't float on top like a rockered ski, it wants and will cut through. There are more options for skiing construction that suit different skiers, styles, abilities and snow conditions than ever before. In the last couple years skiing technology has come so far that there is good reason to have multiple pairs of skis. Skis that do different things really well.

Here, we take a closer look at ski rocker and ski camber and how these elements play a role once you hit the mountain. Traditional skis make contact with the ground surface in the tip and tail sections while the center of the ski is arched upwards. The two contact points often correlate to the widest parts of the shovel tip and tail.

As a point of reference, traditional race skis have significant camber, which helps ski racers track well on hard snow and initiate fast turns. Ski camber reflects what you are picturing for a traditional ski, as seen in the figure above. With this ski shape, you have a longer effective edge. This translates to a more stable and controlled ride when skiing. When you weight the ski, and initiate a turn, the forces you use distribute along the entire effective edge of the ski. In effect, much of the edge pressure applied to the snow is transferred out to the shovel and tail.

This provides better stability, better edge grip, and precision on hard or icy surfaces. Taken together, the longer effective edge holds a cleaner carved arc and offers a snappy transition into your next turn. Now picture a ski laid flat on the same surface. This time, the shape looks more like a water ski.

The middle of the ski touches the surface and both ends arc upward, away from the snow. This shape, as seen in the figure above, is what the ski industry refers to as reverse camber. The first high-performance reverse camber skis, and possibly the most famous, were the Volant Spatula and K2 Pontoon. While these very wide skis had their time to shine, they are generally not recommended unless you are skiing perfect conditions i. Similarly, rocker can be built into the tail of the ski. The designer may give the ski symmetrical rocker similar at the tip and tailor can build in more rocker at the tip, or more at the tail. The more rocker, the shorter the effective edge becomes. Skis with a cambered center and tip rocker are a really good balance for many skiers, and have been very popular the past few seasons. In contrast to tip rocker, tail rocker is denoted by the tail section of the ski rising off the ground closer to the binding.

This feature makes the skis feel softer. What does this all mean when evaluating or purchasing skis? It creates more versatility, with better edge control and stability, when you need it most.

Camber helps especially well when skiing at high speeds, traversing across slopes, and skiing on firm or icy slopes. Having an effective edge is good: It helps you control your turn and gives you power. Camber combined with tip rocker generally makes a more versatile ski. But before we ask you to pick up a wrench and begin tuning your currently under-handling sled, let's take a look at some tips and definitions. Positive and negative camber Imagine two fence posts standing side-by-side, set an equal distance apart and tipped slightly toward each other.

This is positive camber- vertical tip in. Tip the poles away from each other and you have negative camber - vertical tip out. Neither are ideal. Zero ski camber is what we shoot for as we start tuning to keep a straight, predictable ski-bite on both sides of the machine. One to three degrees of camber forces the ski's inside edge down slightly, thus creating aggressive depending on degree right- and left-hand cornering or side-hilling capabilities.

For the most part, camber adjustments are best handled by your dealer, who can make the adjustments to match your riding style. Additionally, dealers can measure the right amount of angle tip-in by compensating for suspension wear.
